We all know exercise is good for the body, but did you know exercise helps your skin look better?

What Does Exercise Do For Us?

We hear it all the time, regular exercise is good for us, so do it!
But Why?
If we have an active life, running around after the kids, or a job where you are always on your feet, why is it important to fit in a good workout 3-4 times a week?
One of the many reasons exercising is good for us is its direct effect on our body’s systems.
Aerobic or other strenuous exercises that challenge us such as Pilates, helps to regulate thyroid functionality, and decrease levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators.

The notable visual effects of regular physical activity are improved muscle tone and a decrease in unwanted fat and cellulite as well as healthy cardiovascular health. Improved cardiovascular functionality benefits your whole body, INCLUDING THE SKIN!

How Can Exercise Help Our Skin Look Its Best?

Anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant.

If you have skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, or psoriasis you might need to take special care to keep your skin protected while exercising. But don’t let these conditions prevent you from being active.
Why?
Increasing blood flow through exercise helps nourish skin cells and helps with skin cell functionality. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, including the skin. Blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells. Contrary to some claims, exercise doesn’t detoxify the skin, as the job of neutralizing toxins belongs mostly to the liver. BUT, by increasing blood flow it helps flush cellular debris out of the system, so think of it as cleansing your skin from the inside out 🙂

The Benefits Of Exercising Outdoors

We all know we should never spend too long out in the sun because of the risk of skin cancer and sun damage that will cause the skin to age faster, however, we do need sunlight to get enough vitamin D. Getting 10-30 minutes of sun exposure at times of the day where the sunlight is mild in the morning or late afternoon is a great way to get your vitamin D levels up and gain all the benefits it has on the skin and body.

Conditions that can be improved by sun-exposure are Eczema and Acne, decreasing their severity and in many cases eliminating them.

Vitamin D is also thought to help to minimise the look of fine lines and wrinkles due to its ability to act as an antioxidant. This helps your body to fight off free-radicals which are thoughts to cause lines on our skin and general deterioration that comes as we get older.

If you are like me and spend your days indoors, then taking a Vitamin D supplement may be the best way to keep yourself not only looking your best but feeling your best. Depleted Vitamin D levels in the body may also result in mental conditions such as depression. If you predominantly spend your time indoors and are feeling down and or your skin is looking dull and tired check in with your healthcare professional and make sure your levels are where they should be 🙂
